Background
At the recent Arts Awards a portrait of John Eyre was entered by local artist Tammy Andrews. The piece is a framed, charcoal on canvas work and is currently on display at the Cannery Arts Centre. It is available for purchase for $1,100.
Officer’s Comment
John Eyre was a British explorer who travelled through the Esperance region from South Australia to Albany in 1840-41. He is credited with being the first European person to traverse the coastline of the Great Australian Bight and Nullarbor Plain by land.
John Eyre’s story is significant to Esperance, as his travelling party, consisting of himself and James Baxter and three aboriginal trackers, came to grief in the Esperance area when two of the trackers attacked and murdered Baxter, escaping with the party’s provisions, leaving Eyre and the third tracker to fend for themselves.
After several weeks surviving on the barest of supplies, they chanced an encounter with a French whaling ship, the Mississippi, in the bay now known as Thistle Cove, who accommodated them until they regained enough strength, then provided provisions for them to continue on their travels to Albany.
Eyre named Rossiter Bay after the Captain of the Mississippi, Mississippi Hill near Thistle Cove after the vessel and Wylie Bay after his aboriginal tracker. The Eyre Highway, stretching from Norseman through to Ceduna is named after John Eyre.
John Eyre’s story provides a noteworthy and important link to the history of the Esperance region and the purchase of the artwork would be a meaningful and relevant addition to the Shire of Esperance Art Collection.
